Information
Its construction dates back to 1019 and is attributed to the Catapano Basilio Boioannes that provided a real work of fortification of the territory of the Dauni Mountains in order to defend the Byzantine dominions in Puglia.
20 meters high and resting on a polygonal base, from which stands the solid cylinder 16 meters high, the tower has an internal diameter of 6.20 meters and circular walls 2.50 meters thick. It was composed of three levels, of which today two have survived. In fact, the third floor of the Tower was demolished and its cornices used in the factory of the so-called Prince’s Palace. The first level, about 14 meters high, is placed on a high level compared to the road level and did not originally have any road access. The Tower was accessed by ladders and through the French door on the second floor, about 4 meters high. From here, then, through a trap door and a rope fixed to an iron ring, it reached the floor below, intended for prisons and equipped with only small slots to allow for poor lighting and air exchange. Today a ladder crosses the barrel vault that separates the two levels, allowing access to the second floor. From here thanks to a stone spiral staircase you can reach the roof from which you can enjoy a precious view of the Maggiore Valley. more
The Tower, restored in the first decade of 2000, houses a multimedia Visit Center realized as part of the project Get Local and dedicated to battles.
